A twin city of South Bend, on the other side of the St. Joseph River, Mishawaka is in St. Joseph County, Indiana. The city is named after Princess Mishawaka, daughter of Shawnee Chief Elkhart. The town was settled in the 1830s, primarily for its bog iron deposits. Today, the city is known as the "Peppermint Capital of the World" due to the rich black loam found in the area that grows large quantities of mint.
