Terre Haute is the seat of Vigo County, Indiana; located near the state's western border with Illinois. The city's name is derived from the French phrase "terre haute", meaning "high land". It was named by French explorers in the area in the early 18th century to describe the plateau-like rise of land next to the Wabash River.
