Located in the northwestern part of the state, Valparaiso is the seat of Porter County, Indiana. On the path of an Indian trail from Rock Island to Detroit, the town had its first log cabin in 1834. First known as Portersville, it was renamed Valparaiso in 1837, after the town by that name in Chile.
