The county seat of Geary County, Kansas is Junction City, which was established in 1854 by Andrew J. Mead and a group of Free Staters, when the steamship they were traveling on could not reach their destination 20 miles to the west because the water was too low. The charter held that the name of the settlement should be Manhattan, so that's what the site was first named. It was later changed to its current name, as one of the steamers the settlers were on had named their landing place Manhattan.
