Founded in 1778 by George Rogers Clark and named for King Louis XVI of France, Louisville is the largest city in the state, and the seat of Jefferson County, Kentucky. Due to a city-county merger in 2003, the city's borders are the same as that of the county. Louisville was an important internal shipping port in the 19th century, and is best known today for the Kentucky Derby.
