The city of Hammond, Louisiana is located in Tangipahoa Parish. It was settled in 1818 and named for Peter Hammond, a Swedish immigrant who was imprisoned by the British during the Napoleonic Wars, escaped and made his way to New Orleans. When he reached what is now Hammond, he bought a plantation and made masts for a living.
