Located about thirty miles from Penobscot Bay, at the confluence of the Penobscot River and Kenduskeag Stream, Bangor is the seat of Penobscot County, and the third largest city in Maine. The first inhabitants of the area were probably the Penobscot people, who still occupy tribal land on the nearby Penobscot Indian Island Reservation. The first European to visit the site was probably the Portuguese Esteban Gomez in 1524, followed by Samuel de Champlain in 1605.
