Ellsworth is the seat of Hancock County, Maine. Historians believe that Norse and other pirates explored the voyages of Columbus, and may have settled there. However, the earliest recorded European settlers were the French, perhaps as early as the 1200s. Today, Ellsworth is a gateway for tourists visiting nearby Acadia National Park, Mount Desert Island, and the Bar Harbor region.
