Fort Kent, in Aroostook County, is the northern terminus of US Route 1, as well as the Northern Forest Canoe Trail. Fort Kent is a border city, located across the St. John River from the Canadian towns of Clair and Saint-François-de-Madawaska, both in New Brunswick, although children on the American side are taught primarily in English while their Canadian counterparts attend French-speaking schools, although French is commonly heard in Fort Kent. The city was established in the summer of 1839 as a border outpost during the bloodless Aroostook War.
