Settled in 1631 as part of Winter Harbor, the area now known as Saco was set off as part of a package that included Biddeford, and was reorganized as Saco in 1653. The city is situated beside Saco Bay on the Gulf of Maine, bordering Biddeford, Scarborough, Buxton, Dayton and Old Orchard Beach.
