The area that is now Waterville was once inhabited by the Caribas tribe of Abenaki Indians, who settled along the east bank of the Kennebec River. Fort Halifax was built by General John Winslow in 1754, and the township was incorporated as Winslow in 1771. Waterville was set off from Winslow and incorporated in 1802 when residents on the west side of the Kennebec were unable to cross the river to attend town meetings. Today, Waterville is home to Colby College and Thomas College.
