Clinton, Maryland, was originally named Surrattsville. Hours after the assassination of Abraham Lincoln, John Wilkes Booth went to the Surrattsville tavern to get a cache of weapons and supplies from Mary Surratt for her son, John Surratt, a conspirator in that assassination. Mrs. Surratt was found guilty of conspiring in the assassination and was hanged. The town was renamed Robeysville because of the notoriety. A few years later, in 1879, it was again renamed, this time to Clinton.
