Damascus is an unincorporated place in Montgomery County, Maryland. The area now known as Damascus was granted by the new state of Maryland to Nathaniel Pigman in 1783. A 40-acre plot was purchased by Edward Hughes in 1819, and subdivided for housing lots for the new settlement which was then known as "The Pleasant Plains of Damascus", a reference to the biblical place. From The town was incorporated in 1890, but withdrew its incorporation in 1914.
