Founded in 1785, Emmitsburg, Maryland, is in Frederick County. The town and surrounding area served as a staging area as well as contingency field of battle in case the Union lost the battle of Gettysburg. In the middle of the night in June of 1863, a mysterious fire, commonly known as “The Great Fire,” started. It burned more than half of the town to the ground.
