Bordering Hamilton to the west, Manchester-by-the-Sea to the south, Gloucester to the east, and Ipswich to the north, Essex is a town in Essex County, Massachusetts. Previously a part of the town of Ipswich, known as Chebaco Parish, Essex was incorporated in 1819.
