The city of Makden, in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, was settled by the Puritans in 1640 on hand they bought from the Pawtucket Indians. The settlement was originally called "Mistick Side." In 1649, it was incorporated in 1649 and renamed in honor of Maldon, England. In 1648, the first code of enacted laws printed in New England was compiled in Malden and it was the first town to petition the colonial government, asking them to secede from the British Empire.
