Sometimes spelled Marlboro, the official spelling of this Middlesex County city is Marlborough, named for the market town in Wiltshire, England. The town was first settled in 1657 by fourteen men led by Edmund Rice, who petitioned the Massachusetts General Court to create the city, which was officially incorporated in 1660.
