Places to eat in Ada Village or Ada Township, Michigan are the focus of topics in this category.
Traditionally, only those dining establishments that provided places for customers to sit, where they were served by a waiter, were known as restaurants. Eventually, take-out and fast food establishments became known as restaurants, as well.
There are several types of restaurants, however. They can be classified according to several variables, such as menu style, the methods of food preparation, cuisine, and pricing.
Ethnic restaurants are those that specialize in either ethnic or national cuisines. These may include such establishments as Mexican restaurants, Italian restaurants, and Chinese restaurants.
As the name implies, fast-food restaurants have an emphasis on the speed of service. Staple menu items are often prepared off-site and frozen until needed. Usually offering a limited menu, food is generally ordered from the counter, electronic terminal, or drive-through window. Dine-in customers are often expected to carry their own food from the counter to the table and later dispose of any waste from their trays. Some examples include McDonald's, Burger King, and Wendy's.
Fast-casual restaurants are similar to fast-food restaurants, except that more of the food is prepared at the restaurant. Some fast-casual restaurants offer table service, although customers will usually order at the counter. The quality of the food tends to be higher than at a fast-food restaurant, but menus are generally more limited than at a casual dining establishment. Chipotle Mexican Grill, Boston Market, and Five Guys are examples of fast-casual restaurants.
Sometimes known as sit-down restaurants, casual dining restaurants serve moderately priced food in a casual atmosphere. Except for buffets, customers of a casual dining restaurant will take a seat at an available table, although seating is sometimes selected by the staff. A waiter or waitress will take the customer's order at the table, then serve the food at the table after it has been prepared, including non-disposable plates and cutlery. While fast food and fast-casual restaurants are often chains or franchises, many casual dining restaurants are independent and locally owned and operated, although some of them are chains, as well. Examples of nationally known casual dining restaurants include Applebee's, Buffalo Wild Wings, and Denny's.
Family-style restaurants are similar to casual dining restaurants, and many of them can fit into both categories, the defining point being an emphasis on providing a menu and atmosphere that encourages family dining. Many family-style restaurants are independently owned and operated local businesses, although Cracker Barrel, Red Robin, and IHOP would fit into this classification.
Fine dining establishments are full-service restaurants with specific, dedicated meal courses. As compared to casual and family casual restaurants, fine dining restaurants will provide a decor featuring higher-quality materials, and will usually require advance reservations and enforce a dress code.
Other variations include barbecues (BBQs), bistros, buffets and smorgasbords, cafes, cafeterias, coffee houses, and pubs, as well as take-out establishments in which customers are often required to line up in front of an outside window, eating either at an outdoor picnic table or patio table, or at home. These may include hot dog or hamburger stands, concession stands, and food trucks.
Another type of restaurant is known as a truck stop, which is part of a larger operation catering to truckers and travelers that may include refueling stations for cars and trucks, rest-stop parking for truckers and travelers, a convenience store, and often showers. The restaurant area of a truck stop generally offers a casual dining atmosphere.
For the purpose of categorization here, we will also include places that serve drinks to be consumed on the premises. These may be known as bars, bistros, cocktail lounges, nightclubs, pubs, saloons, taprooms, taverns, and others, including speakeasies and honky-tonks. While the focus is often on alcoholic beverages, these establishments often serve food, as well.
Bakeries, ice cream shops, pizzerias, and sandwich bars are also appropriate for this category.
However, Ada or Ada Township establishments whose business models are focused on selling prepared foods and bottled or canned drinks to be taken home would be listed under Places to Shop rather than in this category.
