A Catholic presence along the St. Clair River has its origins in the late 1600s, with French trappers who traded with the Indians, supplying the fur trade. A Catholic mission was established in Algonac around 1866, and a church was built a few years later, although a resident pastor was not appointed until 1894. The first pastor, Father Francis Kemper, was succeeded by Father Benoit Gery in 1895, a year after the first church was destroyed by fire. A new church was built, and Father Gery remained until he was replaced by Father Walter Hardy in 1924. St. Catherine celebrated its centennial anniversary in 1994.
Other churches in Algonac include Algonac Baptist Church, Algonac Church of Christ, Algonac Restoration Branch of Jesus Christ Church, and Algonac Trinity United Methodist Church. Woodside Bible Church is just north of the city limits.
