Public school education in Alpena is through Alpena Public Schools. Established in 1963 as the first county-wide district in the state, APS offers a PK-12th-grade curriculum though one general high school, an alternative high school, a junior high school, and six elementary schools. By area, APS is the largest school district in the Lower Peninsula.
