The Au Gres River begins in eastern Ogemaw County and flows generally south, passing through the city of Au Gres to empty into Saginaw Bay. Early French explorers named the area Point Au Gres, which means "gritty stone" in French, a reference to the sandstone that was prevalent along the river bottom. The city was built on a glacial lake feature that consisted of clay or shallow layers of sand over clay.

The original settlers were loggers, and they were followed by workers on the Saginaw-Au Sable State Road, which reached Au Sable in 1862. John Edward Bradley is acknowledged as the first permanent settler, building the Bradley House in 1866.

A post office was established there on August 8, 1867, with Bradley as the first postmaster. The post office was closed in 1874 but restored on April 30, 1874. The settlement was never incorporated as a village but became a city in 1905.

Given its location on Lake Huron and the river that winds through the city, tourism and seasonal recreational activities are an important part of the Au Gres economy today. The City of Au Gres Riverfront Campground features more than a hundred campsites and two cabin rentals, as well as a family picnic area, a fish cleaning station, and a boat launch providing access to Saginaw Bay and Lake Huron, via the river. The grounds also include two baseball fields, two lighted tennis courts, a volleyball court, and two lighted basketball courts. A variety of events are hosted on the grounds.

The city also has an industrial and commercial base, including an industrial park operated by the city, and several retail stores.
