Early churches in Bad Axe included the First Presbyterian Church, whose members first gathered together in 1878 in a building that consisted of a large room with seats around the wall. It burned in a fire in 1881, and members gathered in a variety of homes until the church was formally organized in 1883, and a 30x40-foot frame structure, was built. By 1889, the congregation needed a much larger building. Completed in 1900, the new church could hold up to five hundred people.
