Situated in northeastern Superior Township, in Chippewa County, Brimley, Michigan is an unincorporated community on the southern shores of Walska Bay, in the southeastern portion of Lake Superior, in the Upper Peninsula.
As an unincorporated community, Brimley lacks defined borders, but the area generally considered to be part of the community consists of two settlement areas, one along the bay, the other a mile or so south of there, connected by M-221, which is the main route through the community. Other routes include 6 Mile Road, Lakeshore Drive, and Irish Line Road. The City of Sault Ste Marie is about fifteen miles northeast of Brimley, while the unincorporated community of Bay Mills is just over four miles north-northwest, and Raco is approximately nine miles southwest.
The Bay Mills Indian Community, about four miles north, is the land base of one of several federally recognized Sault Ste Marie bands of Chippewa, who are also known as the Ojibwa. The portion of the reservation north of Brimley is served by the Brimley post office, and Brimley is part of a tax agreement area with the tribe. Although it is separate from Brimley, resources related to the Indian Community near Brimley would be appropriate for this category.
Bay Mills Community College, a tribal college, is located in Brimley.
The Waiska River, Little Waiska Creek, and Orrs Creek flow through portions of the community.
Founded on the Waiska River when a station was established there by the Duluth, South Shore & Atlantic Railroad in 1872. Platted in 1887, a post office was opened on May 2, 1888, and named Superior, after the township. George Hodge was the community's first postmaster. To avoid confusion with a station on the same railroad line in Minnesota that was also named Superior, the Michigan community was named Brimley, for a postal employee, on March 6, 1896.
The focus of this category is on the Michigan community known as Brimley. As there are no defined boundaries to the community, websites representing any resources with Brimley postal addresses are suitable for this category, including businesses and industries, schools, churches, organizations, attractions, events, and sporting and recreational opportunities.
