Carson City is in east Bloomer Township, southeast Montcalm County, in the central Lower Peninsula of Michigan.

The main routes through the city M-57 (Main Street), which is also known as Carson City Road and Cleveland Road, and South Mount Hope Road (Division Street). County Line Road serves as the city's eastern boundary, separating it from Gratiot County, and East Sessions Road makes up a portion of the city's northern boundary.

Hubbardston is 6.3 miles south, Perrington is 8.9 miles to the east, Maple Rapids is 12.6 miles southeast, Sheridan is 13.7 miles west, Stanton is 19.9 miles northwest, Ithaca is 20.0 miles northeast, and Ionia is 23.8 miles southwest of Carson City.

Fish Creek winds through the western part of the city, where it forms the basis for Haradine Park.

The land upon which the city was formed was first acquired by Joseph Throop in 1850, platted on land then owned by R.M. Abbott, Delia Miner, and Hiram T. Sherman in 1866, and recorded in 1871. Thomas Scott and his nephews, John and Thomas LaDue, purchased the first lot in 1867. Doing business as Scott & LaDue, they opened a sawmill in 1868, and a gristmill in 1870.

On August 3, 1868, the North Shade post office, in Gratiot County, was moved to Carson City, and named for Carson City, Nevada. A newspaper, the Coral Enterprise, began publishing in 1877. Carson City was incorporated as a village in 1867, becoming a city in 1960.

Carson City is a small city, with just over a thousand residents at the time of the 2010 census. Its peak population was 1,229 in 1980. Its major employers are in the public sector, healthcare, and education, although the city includes several private contractors and retail stores that employ residents.

The city includes three parks, each with a play area and picnic areas with shelters that can be reserved for a fee. There are also several sports programs in Carson City, operated by volunteers, and there are several golf courses in the surrounding region. Headquartered in the city, Carson City-Crystal Area Schools is a public school district that operates Carson City Elementary School, Carson City-Crystal Upper Elementary and Middle School, Carson City-Crystal High School, and Carson City-Crystal Alternative Education.

The Carson City post office serves most of Bloomer Township, the southern portion of Crystal Township, western North Shade Township, and southwestern New Haven Township.
