the community began as a railroad station for a Pere Marquette branch line that ran between Alma and Howard City, about four miles east of Edmore. A post office was established on July 26, 1876, with Frederick H. Harlin as its first postmaster. The village was platted that same year but never incorporated. Both the village and the lake were named for the cedar trees that grew at the edge of the lake.
