Situated in northern Wales Township, St. Clair County, in the Thumb Region of Michigan's Lower Peninsula, Goodells is an unincorporated village founded as a railroad town in 1866.
As an unincorporated community, the village doesn't have defined borders, but the inhabited place known as Goodells is concentrated at the intersection of Goodells Road and Morris Road, although the area north of I-69, south of Lapeer Road, east of Wales Center Road, and west of Castor Road might be considered part of Goodells.
The Goodells post office serves all of Wales Township, although the township also includes the unincorporated communities of Lambs, Thornton, and Wales Center.
The Pine River flows through the community, and through Goodells County Park, in the east, which includes Goodells Water Park, the St. Clair County Farm Museum, and a special events arena.
Cities and villages within twenty miles of Goodells include Emmett, Memphis, Port Huron, Capac, Yale, Marysville, St. Clair, and Richmond, while the following unincorporated communities are within ten miles: Thornton, Wales Center, Avoca, Lambs, Ruby, Wadhams, Smiths Creek, Columbus, West Tappan, and Sparlingville.
Goodells was founded when the Grand Trunk Railroad extended its line through the area and established a station there in 1866. Prior to that time, about half of the land in the area was in the hands of land speculators and, as late as 1840, Clark S. Cusick, Joseph H. Dutton, and Joshua Tompkins were the only permanent residents in the area. A post office was established on November 7, 1870, with John C. Johnstone as postmaster.
The Goodells post office is south of the main settlement area, about halfway to I-69.
