Although there were some farms in the area prior to that time, its settlement began in 1844 when the Grand Trunk Railroad came through the area, opening a branch station and depot on land acquired from Halstead Gregory, who had a farm there. Gregory opened a store near the depot, and a post office was established in his store on March 14, 1884, with Halstead Gregory as postmaster.
