Chartered by the Grosse Ile Rotary Club, Pack 1261 is associated with the Boy Scouts of America and created as a program for boys who were too young to be Boy Scouts. Founded in 1959, the primary location for the GIHS is in the East River Road Historic District, consisting of the former Michigan Central Railroad Depot (1904), the Customs House (1873), Saint James Episcopal Church (1867), and six 19th-century homes north of the church. The Society also protects the Grosse Ile Lighthouse (1894), and some of the buildings at the former Grosse Ile Naval Air Station. GIHS has displays in the Township Hall and historic markers at various locations on the island.

Grosse Ile Nature & Land Conservancy
The Conservancy is an independent non-profit organization formed in 1993, and which claims to be the only private organization in Grosse Ile Township that can legally protect property either through direct ownership of land or through conservation easements. Its properties are listed, with photographs of selected sites, and information about making land donations to the Conservancy is included, with a calendar of events, membership information, volunteer opportunities, and contacts.
