Bordering Lake Saint Clair and Canada to the east and south, the City of Grosse Pointe Farms, Michigan is an inner suburb of Detroit, which borders it to the west.

Grosse Point borders the Grosse Pointe Farms to the southwest, while Grosse Pointe Woods and Grosse Pointe Shores border it to the north or northeast. Locally known as The Farms, the Wayne County city is within twenty miles of several cities in the Detroit Metro Region, including Harper Woods, Grosse Pointe Park, Eastpointe, St. Clair Shores, Roseville, Hamtramck, Center Line, Fraser, Highland Park, Warren, Mt. Clemens, Dearborn, Hazel Park, Sterling Heights, Ferndale, Pleasant Ridge, and Madison Heights.

Grosse Pointe Farms includes the point in Grosse Pointe, derived from a bend in the lake.

The Farms has a more varied street pattern and topography than the other Grosse Pointes. While Grosse Pointe and Grosse Pointe Park use a standard street grid, and are largely flat, the streets of Grosse Pointe Farms mostly extend the same grid flowing out of Detroit, although the streets in some districts are irregular and curving. A ridge runs through the center of the city.

Originally, Grosse Pointe Farms was part of the village of Grosse Pointe, when it was incorporated in 1880. The portion of the village northeast of Fisher Road split off from Grosse Pointe in 1893 over a dispute related to the location of a tavern, and was incorporated as a separate village, becoming a city in 1950. A post office was established in Grosse Pointe Farms on December 28, 1898, with Frank R. Cadieux as postmaster.

Today, the largest employer in Grosse Pointe Farms is the Henry Ford Medical Center, which is located in the southwestern part of the city. Saga Communications, which owns radio stations throughout the country, is headquartered in Grosse Pointe Farms.

Public school students in the city attend campuses of Grosse Pointe Public Schools, which has campuses in Grosse Pointe, Grosse Pointe Farms, Grosse Pointe Park, and Grosse Pointe Woods. Saint Park on the Lake Catholic School, situated in the Saint Paul Catholic Church Complex in Grosse Pointe Farms, offers a PK-8th-grade curriculum. Founded in 1885, the Grosse Pointe Academy is an independent, non-profit school within the city that also offers a PK-8th-grade curriculum.
