Covering an area of 1.75 square miles, the Village of Hillman, Michigan is mostly in central-eastern Hillman Township, in Montmorency County, with a portion extending east into northern Green Township, in Alpena County.

The primary routes to and from the village include M-32, which touches the village limits in the south and southeast, connecting with Country Road 451, which runs north-south through the center of town. Other routes include Country Road 459 and Pleasant Valley Road.

The city of Alpena and the village of Posen, both about twenty miles from Hillman, are the only other incorporated municipalities within twenty-five miles. The unincorporated community of Flanders is about eight miles away.

The Thunder Bay River and Anchor Creek both flow through the village.

Hillman was founded in 1880 by John Hillman Stevens, who contributed the land for the plat. A post office was established there on April 4, 1882, with Selah Arms as the first postmaster. Hillman was Montmorency's county seat from 1881 to 1891 when it was moved to Atlanta. Hillman was incorporated as a village in 1891.

Hillman had a population of 701 at the time of the 2010 census, which is its peak population. Since first appearing on the census rolls in 1900, Hillman has mostly increased in population, except for significant decreases between 1910 and 1930, and in 1970. It is estimated to decrease slightly in the 2020 census.
