The community, in eastern LaSalle Township, Monroe County, is primarily along US-24 (South Telegraph Road) and M-125 (South Dixie Highway), which run roughly parallel to I-75, to the east. It includes the area between US-24 and M-125, from Foster Lane in the south, to Woodchuck Creek in the north, with significant extensions to the east and west along West Stern Road, East Stern Road, and Laplaisance Road.
Otter Creek and several smaller streams cross the CDP, sometimes forming a portion of its boundaries where the CDP extends west of US-24 or east of M-125.

The unincorporated communities of South Monroe, North Shores, Grand View, Evergreen Acres, Avalon Beach, Erie, Patterson Gardens, West Monroe, and Bolles Harbor, are within ten miles of LaSalle.
LaSalle is a small, residential community, with little in the way of commercial businesses.
The community was founded by the Valiquette family, French-Canadians who came in 1831. A post office was established in April of 1832, and named for two brothers who were named LeSelle. Martin V. Withington was the first postmaster. The post office was closed on December 5, 1833, but restored on May 21, 1834. Still in operation, the post office serves most of the township.
The LaSalle Township offices are in the community, including its volunteer fire department.
The community is sometimes displayed as two words, as in La Salle.
