Lakeside, Michigan is one of a group of communities known as Harbor Country, that includes Grand Beach, Harbert, New Buffalo, Three Oaks, Sawyer, and Union Pier.
Situated in Chikaming Township, Berrien County, in the southwestern corner of the Lower Peninsula, Lakeside is on the shores of Lake Michigan, just west of I-94. Harbor Country is a region of Michigan just north of the Indiana state line known as an upscale weekend vacation area.
The community was founded around a pier and sawmill built in 1854 by John, James, and Joseph Wilkinson. When the Chicago & Western Michigan (Pere Marquette) Railroad established a station there in 1858, it became known as Wilkinson, for the community's founders. However, when a post office was established on June 23, 1874, the postal service adopted the name of Lake Side, reportedly due to the Wilkinsons' sympathies for the South during the Civil War. John S. Gibson was the first postmaster, and the post office changed the name to Lakeside on June 11, 1894.
The chief routes through the community are I-94 and Red Arrow Highway, which run roughly parallel, the interstate being a little further inland.
Michigan cities and villages within twenty miles of Lakeside include New Buffalo, Three Oaks, Bridgman, Grand Beach, Michiana, Galien, Baroda, Stevensville, Buchanan, and Shoreham, and the unincorporated communities of Union Pier, Harbert, Sawyer, and New Troy are within ten miles of Lakeside. As Lakeside is near the Michigan-Indiana border, several Indiana localities are within twenty miles of the community as well. These are Galena, Michiana Shores, Long Beach, Springfield, Michigan City, Kankakee, Trail Creek, New Carlisle, and Hudson Lake.
The focus of this category is on the unincorporated community of Lakeside, Michigan. Businesses, industries, schools, places of worship, organizations, attractions, and events within the area known as Lakeside are appropriate here.
