Later that year, the Steels's platted a townsite as Middleville, for its location between Grand Rapids and Grand Haven, but the post office retained the name of Steele's Landing.
In 1855, a Grand Rapids resident named Lamont Chubb offered the village a road scraper in exchange for naming the community for him. The offer was accepted, and the village and post office were renamed Lamont on July 2, 1856.
