Although Lowell is a rapidly growing city, it is not a large city, with a population of around four thousand, but it is a historic city within the Grand Rapids Metro Region, and easily accessible.

The Downtown Lowell Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1999. The city was founded on the site of a Native American Ottawa village, and first settled by European-Americans in the early 1830s. The city's historic district covers both sides of five city blocks, encompassing fifty-six buildings and structures, the majority of which were built from 1865 to 1890.
