The focus of this portion of our guide is on topics related to belief, faith, religion, and spirituality in McBain, Michigan.

These terms are often used interchangeably and, in some contexts, this may be appropriate. They do, however, have unique definitions and usages.

Belief refers to the acceptance of a fact, opinion, or assertion as being real or true, without immediate personal knowledge, often upon reliance on another's word or testimony.

Faith is similar, but stronger, referring to the acceptance of what is declared by another, resting solely and implicitly on his authority and veracity, or complete reliance on testimony. In the context of Christianity, faith is the strong belief in the facts and truth of the Scriptures, and an affectionate belief in the person and work of Jesus Christ, affecting the character and the life of the one who has faith.

Matthew 21:22 says that faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ, and Hebrews 11:1 says that faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.

Religion can have several definitions, some of which are nearly synonymous with belief or faith, as in someone getting religion. A common definition of religion, however, refers to an institution to express common beliefs in divine power, in the sense that the top four religions in the world are Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, and Buddhism.

Spirituality has several definitions, but it is generally a reference to a focus on things not of this world or not of the physical self, such as a religion or a worldview. Although the term is usually used to refer to the practice of faith in a deity, it does not necessarily relate to a deity.

However, this part of our guide will largely refer to ministries or places of worship in McBain, Michigan, regardless of the particular religion, denomination, or faith.

According to a recent survey of McBain residents, the most popular religion in the city is Presbyterianism, by far. The Presbyterians are followed distantly by the Catholics, Methodists, and Lutherans, with no other religions or denominations garnering more than one percent, except that more than six percent cited an affiliation with an Anabaptist or Protestant denomination that was not part of that particular survey, or with various non-denominational Protestant churches.
