Millington, Michigan is a village in southern Tuscola County, where it is surrounded by Millington Township.
While Millington is a relatively rural village, it serves as a bedroom community for people who work in Saginaw or Flint, each about twenty-five miles away, or in Bay City, thirty miles from Millington. Cities and villages within twenty miles of Millington include Vassar, Otisville, Otter Lake, Frankenmuth, Mayville, Columbiaville, Birch Run, Reese, Clio, Fairgrove, Mt. Morris, and Caro. The unincorporated community of Fostoria is about ten miles away.
The chief route through the village is M-15 (State Road), which intersects Millington Road (Main Street) in the center of town. Other routes include Barnes Road, Caine Road, Ellis Road, and Fulmer Road.
Millington was named for the creek that flows through it, which was itself named for the early mills that were built along the stream. Edwin C. Brainerd became the first settler in the community on December 24, 1850, and was the only European-American settler until 1853. By 1856, there were enough families in the community to support a school. On June 29, 1857, a post office was established, with Amos Wolverton as the first postmaster.
Lane & Wolfe constructed a sawmill along the creek in 1859, and the village was platted and recorded as Lanesville in 1860. For a time before that, it was also known as Podunk. However, the community was also known as Millington and, in 1872, it was re-platted by D.M. Blocher, then the primary landowner in the area, and officially named Millington, which was incorporated as a village in 1877.
In 1873, the Detroit & Bay City Railroad opened a station stop in Millington, allowing local farmers and lumbermen to export grains, potatoes, livestock, lumber, and pine shingles.
The village's peak population was 1,237 in 1980, although it currently has a population just below one thousand.
Millington is served by Millington Public Schools, a K-12 public school system, as well as St. Paul Lutheran, a K-8 Lutheran Christian school.
