Munith, Michigan is an unincorporated community in northeastern Jackson County, spanning Henrietta and Waterloo townships.
As Munith is not an incorporated community, it does not have defined borders. The main settlement area, however, is along M-106 (Plum Orchard Road), and south along Coon Hill Road, which is Main Street in Munith. Within the community, Waterloo Munith Road connects with Coon Hill Road in the south, while Coon Hill Road is known as Musbach Road north of M-106.
Cities and villages within twenty miles of Munith are Stockbridge, Grass Lake, Leslie, Dansville, Jackson, Chelsea, and Pinckney, while the unincorporated communities of Henrietta Station, Fitchburg, Pleasant Lake, Stockbridge, Waterloo, Roots, and Bunker Hill Center are within ten miles.
Munith is a very small community, one without even a stoplight. The Henrietta Township Hall is within the main part of the community, and there is also a gas station with a convenience store, a couple of churches, and a post office, which serves a larger area that includes portions of both Henrietta and Waterloo townships. The headquarters of Farmers State Bank is in Munith.
The community was founded when the Grand Trunk Western built a depot on Hiram Sutton's farm, to serve its Jackson branch line, so the place was first known as Sutton's Crossing. On April 28, 1880, the West Portage post office was moved to Sutton's Crossing but, at the suggestion of an early settler, Charles H. Smith, it was renamed for Munich, Germany, as many of the settlers in the community were German immigrants. A man named Mr. Hoyt served as the first postmaster. Hiram Sutton platted the village, he recorded it as Munith rather than as Munich. The village was never incorporated.
