Muskegon Heights was created after the decline of the lumbering era. Seeking new business, a group of people formed the Muskegon Improvement Company in 1890, acquired a thousand acres of land, platted the townsite, and sold lots using a lottery system. Proceeds from the sale of lots were used to subsidize new businesses.
The plan succeeded, and Muskegon Heights was incorporated as a village in 1891 and became a city in 1903. The Chicago & Western Michigan Railroad, which later became the Pere Marquette, opened a station in Muskegon Heights. The Grand Rapids, Grand Haven & Muskegon Railway, an electric urban line, operated on a private right of way between Grand Rapids and Muskegon Heights in the early 1900s, as well, carrying passengers and freight.
A post office was established on July 25, 1891, with William Charles Hopper as postmaster, and it became a branch of the Muskegon post office on May 14, 1896.
