North Adams, Michigan is in north-central Adams Township, Hillsdale County, in the southern Lower Peninsula.
The small village is centered on the intersection of North Adams Road and Knowles Road. Cities and villages within twenty miles of North Adams include Jonesville, Addison, Hillsdale, Hanover, Allen, Litchfield, Hudson, Cement City, Quincy, and Reading, while the unincorporated communities of Moscow, Jerome, Osseo, and Pittsford are within ten miles of the village.
Settled by European-Americans in the early 1830s, the community was known as Cutler's Corners by 1835. Named for William Cutler, who opened a tavern there, a post office was established under that name on June 27, 1848, with Nicholas G. Vreeland as postmaster.
Around the same time, a community by the name of Adams was formed, and it was named for Henry P. Adams, a pioneer settler. Owned by John O. and Julius Swift, Swift & Company built a sawmill in Adams in 1837. A post office was established under that name on May 4, 1837, with Salmon Sharp as postmaster.
However, when the Detroit, Hillsdale & Southwestern Railroad came through, and established a station in Cutler's Corners, the Adams community soon failed. The Adams post office was moved to Cutler's Corners on February 28, 1857, and renamed North Adams, a name that was soon adopted for the community.
North Adams was platted and recorded in 1871, and it was incorporated as a village in 1881, named for its location in Adams Township.
Never a large town, the population of North Adams has remained above four hundred and below six hundred since it first appeared on a census roll. In 1880, its population was 433, and there were 477 people in North Adams in 2010. Its peak population was 574 in 1970.
