Palmer, Michigan is an unincorporated community in northwestern Richmond Township, Marquette County, the Upper Peninsula.
The chief route through the community is M-35, which passes through its downtown district. Other routes include CR-546.
While unincorporated communities in Michigan do not have specified boundaries, Palmer is also a census-designated place (CDP) for the purposes of the US census. While the primary residential area of the CDP is east of Warner Creek and M-35, east to Smith Street, a larger section of the CDP continues east, bounded by County Highway MB and County Highway MC.
The only incorporated cities or villages within fifty miles of Palmer are Negaunee, Ishpeming, Marquette, and Chatham, although the unincorporated communities of Eagle Mills and National Mine are within ten miles.
Palmer is flanked by the Empire Mine, owned by Cleveland Cliffs, but shut down since August of 2016. Like many Upper Peninsula communities, Palmer was founded as a mining town, with connections to the railroad.
Palmer was settled by European-Americans around 1873 as a station along the Chicago & Northwestern Railroad's loop line. The Volunteer Mine was located in Palmer, and leased by the Cleveland Cliff's Iron Company in 1899.
A post office was established on May 23, 1873, with Robert M. Gilleland as the first postmaster. Palmer was named for L.C. Palmer, a mining executive. Today, the Palmer post office serves an area slightly larger than the CDP.
Today, Palmer is a small residential community of about four hundred people that supports a grocery store, a bar and grill, and perhaps a few other small businesses serving residents, outdoor enthusiasts, and passersby.
The focus of this portion of our guide is on the small town of Palmer, Michigan, and the area encompassed by the Palmer CDP. Local businesses, industries, schools, churches, organizations, attractions, events, and recreational opportunities are appropriate for this category.
