Held each July, the three-day event features the work of over four hundred artists from around the country and is attended by about three hundred thousand people. Locally known as the Michigan Phil, the professional symphony orchestra is based in Plymouth, Michigan. Organized as the Plymouth Symphony in 1945, it later took its current name to reflect its role as a professional regional orchestra. Featuring forty lanes of bowling Monday through Sunday, Plaza Lanes hosts men's and women's competitive and fun leagues, as well as summer and spring leagues, youth programs, and open bowling. The annual events began as a community family picnic sponsored by the Plymouth Rotary Club in 1956. After no festival was held in 1959, it returned under its current name in 1960. In service since 1964, the youth hockey program plays its home games at the Plymouth Cultural Center in Plymouth, Michigan. Held in downtown Plymouth, Michigan, the ice carving event is held each year in February, with the ice sculptures available for viewing twenty-four hours a day and, in most cases, they remain standing after the event, as long as the weather permits. Ice carvings are displayed along the sidewalks of Plymouth, in front of local merchants and restaurants, in the downtown area. Although events may differ slightly from year to year, the event may include, besides the carvings, several other events.
