Situated in the southwest corner of Denmark Township, in east Tuscola County, Richville is a small, unincorporated locality near the Thumb region of Michigan's Lower Peninsula.
As an unincorporated community, Richville doesn't have defined boundaries, but it is concentrated in the area where M-15 (Saginaw Road) intersects Van Buren Road and M-46 (Sanilac Road).
Incorporated cities and villages within twenty-five miles of Richville include Reese, Vassar, Frankenmuth, Millington, Saginaw, Fairgrove, Zilwaukee, Birch Run, Mayville, Bay City, Caro, Clio, Essexville, Akron, Otisville, Otter Lake, Mt. Morris, Unionville, and Kingston, while the unincorporated communities of Denmark Junction, Arthur, Blumfield Corners, Gera, Frankentrost, and Tuscola are within ten miles.
In 1849, Pastor Ferdinand Sievers, of Bay County, acquired more than 1,500 acres of virgin forest here to establish a colony for German immigrants. A year later, Pastor Herman Kuehn led a group of two German families to settle the area and, in 1851, Pastor Loehe led a larger group of German Lutherans to the area. St. Michael's Lutheran Church was organized in 1851, and continues to serve the community.
Originally, the settlement was known as Frankenhilf, which combined Franconia, a district of Bavaria, and hilf, which means "assistance" in German. However, when the Michigan Central Railroad came through, conductors found it difficult to pronounce the name of the community, so it was renamed Richville, reportedly a reference to its rich farmland.
A post office was established under that name on June 23, 1862, with John C. Edelman as postmaster.
