Geographically, the area of Rives Township was the point where the 1815 surveyors began the task of sectioning the six-mile-square township with thirty-six one-mile-square sections across the entire state.

The township and community were named for John C. Rives, a Maryland resident who was influential in politics during the Andrew Jackson presidency, but who never resided in Rives Township.

European-American settlement began in 1834 and 1835, before the township was organized. Samuel Prescott and Henry Fifield, who came in 1834, are acknowledged as the community's founders, and others soon followed.

A post office was established as West Rives on June 15, 1839, with Samuel Prescott as postmaster, as the office was located in his home on the west side of the Michigan Central Railroad tracks. The community became the junction between the Michigan Central lines to Saginaw and Grand Rapids, and development progressed on the eastern side of the tracks, leading to a renaming of the post office to Eaton Rapids Junction on March 12, 1866. On May 7 of that year, it was renamed Rives Junction. Currently, the Rives Junction post office serves a large portion of Rives Township and a northeastern portion of Tompkins Township.
