Samaria is a small community along Samaria Road, roughly between Jackman Road and Lewis Avenue, in Bedford Township, Monroe County, in the southeast corner of Michigan's Lower Peninsula.
As an unincorporated community, Samaria has no legally defined boundaries, however.
US Route 23 is west of Samaria, and US Route 24 (Telegraph Road) and M-125 (South Dixie Highway) are to the east. At one time, M-151 ran through the center of Samaria, but it was truncated in 1965, and later decommissioned.
The Ohio border is about five miles south of Samaria. Ohio localities within twenty-five miles of Samaria include Sylvania, Toledo, Rossford, Ottawa Hills, Oregon, Holland, Northwood, and Harbor View, while Michigan cities and villages within twenty-five miles Luna Pier, Petersburg, Monroe, Deerfield, Dundee, Maybee, Blissfield, Britton, Carleton, and Milan, and the unincorporated Michigan communities of Temperance, Liberty Corners, Lambertville, Ida, La Salle, and North Shores are within ten miles.
European-American settlers began coming into the area in the 1830s, although a community wasn't formed until the Toledo, Ann Arbor & Northern Railroad (later, the Ann Arbor Railroad) came through around 1872, establishing a station. The railroad still runs through the community, although there is no longer a station in Samaria.
Originally, the community was known as Weeksville, for Samuel and Mary (Mason) Weeks, who were early residents.
When a post office was established on January 17, 1879, the office was named Samaria, with Samuel Weeks as the first postmaster. The post office has been in operation since, although most of the surrounding area is served by the Temperance post office zip code.
Samaria is a very small community, without much in the way of services. However, Samaria Park, located in downtown Samaria, includes a woodland trail, picnic areas, a playground, a baseball diamond, and a community building that can be rented for meetings, family reunions, and other events. It is operated by Bedford Township.
This portion of our guide is focused on the unincorporated community of Samaria, Michigan. Online resources for any governmental bodies within the community, as well as local businesses, industries, schools, places of worship, organizations, attractions, events, and recreational facilities, are appropriate for this category.
