Sand Creek, Michigan is a small locality in Madison Charter Township, in central Lenawee County, in the southern part of the Lower Peninsula.
As an unincorporated community, Sand Creek does not have legally defined boundaries, but it is about eight miles southwest of Adrian.
Although Sand Creek never grew to become an incorporated village or city, it has a long history. The first European-American land acquisition in the area was by Joshua and Rebecca Thurber, who were granted by the government in 1820. The settlement that grew up there was first known for them, as Thurber.
The Wabash Railroad came through in the early 1880s, opening a station at Thurber in 1881. On September 27, 1881, a post office was established by that name, with William Lafayette Briggs as postmaster, as the post office was located in his store.
On March 5, 1891, its name was changed to Sand Creek. On June 11, 1894, it was changed to Sandcreek, as it remained until 1957, when the post office's name was changed back to Sand Creek.
Sand Creek is situated just south of the area where Stoney Creek flows into the South Branch of the Raisin River. The creek that flows through the community before emptying into the river was formerly known as Sand Creek, which inspired the name of the community.
The main route through the locality is Sand Creek Highway, which intersects West Gorman Road to the south, and Livesay Road in the downtown area. Development in Sand Creek is largely residential and concentrated along Livesay Road and Sand Creek Highway, as well as along West Gorman Road, east and west of Sand Creek Highway.
Michigan cities and villages within twenty-five miles of Sand Creek include Adrian, Clayton, Morenci, Blissfield, Hudson, Onsted, Tecumseh, Deerfield, Clinton, and Petersburg, while the unincorporated communities of Fairfield and Dover are within ten miles. As Sand Creek isn't far from the Ohio border, the Ohio localities of Whiteville, Pike, and Advance are within twenty-five miles of Sand Creek, as well.
The K-12 population of Sand Creek is served by Sand Creek Community Schools, which operates Sand Creek Junior/Senior High School and Ruth McGregor Elementary School, both in the southern part of the community.
