The Village of South Rockwood, Michigan is in Berlin Township, in northeastern Monroe County, in the southeast quadrant of the Lower Peninsula.
The Huron River forms the northern boundary of South Rockwood, separating the village from the cities of Flat Rock and Rockwood in Wayne County. I-75 runs roughly northeast-southwest through the village and is accessible via Exit 26 to South Huron River Drive. North Dixie Highway parallels the interstate to the southeast. Other routes connecting South Rockwood with neighboring communities include Armstrong Road, Brandon Road, Carleton Rockwood Road, Haggerman Road, and Ready Road.
Cities and villages within twenty miles of South Rockwood include Flat Rock, Rockwood, Gibraltar, Woodhaven, Carleton, Trenton, Estral Beach, Riverview, Southgate, Wyandotte, Taylor, Allen Park, Monroe, Lincoln Park, Romulus, River Rouge, Ecorse, Melvindale, Maybee, Inkster, and Dearborn.
Wesburn Golf and Country Club takes up a large portion of the village's northwestern boundary, and it is in this area that Port Creek feeds into the Huron River.
South Rockwood was founded by John Strong in 1863, and apparently named for Rockwood, Ontario, Canada. Given its name as South Rockwood, I would be inclined to believe that it was named for its location south of Rockwood, which had been settled about thirty years prior, but Rockwood was known as Huron Station until 1872, seven years after South Rockwood was incorporated as a village.
South Rockwood was a station on the Lake Shore & Michigan Southern Railroad, the Michigan Central Railroad, and the Detroit & Toledo Shore Line Railroad. The railroads also had a water tower, a section house, and a crossover in South Rockwood.
A post office was established in a store operated by Archibald McTaggart on July 5, 1877, and South Rockwood was incorporated as a village in 1955.
This portion of our web guide focuses on the village, along with any businesses, industries, schools, places of worship, organizations, attractions, events, entertainment venues, and recreational opportunities in South Rockford, Michigan.
