The focal point of this portion of our guide is on places to eat or drink in Southfield, Michigan.

Often known as restaurants or bars, these businesses are known by a variety of other names. In many cases, the owner decides whether to refer to his dining establishment as a restaurant, a diner, a cafe, or something else, while bars might be known as saloons or pubs.

In other cases, the name describes the type of operation or cuisine. There are different types of restaurants.

Traditionally, restaurants were places where guests are seated at a table, in which a waiter takes the order and serves the prepared food when it is ready, while diners, while diners were places where guests sat at counters, although there were often tables available, as well. Today, these terms are interchangeable.

A restaurant might be classified or named according to its perceived price or formality, according to the type of cuisine, or the manner of service offered. More example, there are Mexican restaurants, Chinese restaurants, and so on. Fast-food restaurants emphasize the speed of service, and it is generally accepted that the quality of the food will be lower than that served in a fine dining establishment and that the menu choices will be more limited. Fine dining restaurants promise a higher quality of food and may enforce a dress code. Casual dining or family-style restaurants are in between, often offering a good dining experience, but without the formality of a fine dining establishment or the limitations of a fast-food place.

Restaurants marketed as buffets or smorgasbords offer a selection of foods at a fixed price. Food is served from trays set around bars, and customers select what they want and serve themselves. The range of choices may be eclectic or it might focus on a specific type of cuisine, such as Chinese or Swedish food. Family-style restaurants sometimes offer a buffet as an optional choice, commonly a breakfast buffet or a Sunday dinner buffet, while giving customers the option of ordering from a menu instead.

Family-style and casual dining restaurants often bill themselves as cafes or diners and are informal dining establishments offering a selection of hot meals and made-to-order sandwiches or rolls. Traditional cafes were not full restaurants because their focus was on serving hot coffee or tea, and are sometimes known as coffee houses.

Bars might be known as pubs, saloons, taverns, or by other names.

Several major highways pass through Southfield, a metropolitan city with several schools and colleges, medical facilities, industries, and businesses. As such, the city can support a large number and variety of places to eat or drink, and these are the focus of this category.

Retail shops, such as grocery or liquor stores, would be listed in a Places to Shop category, however.
