First appearing on a census roll in 1890 with a population of 414, Unionville's population, as of 2020, was 481, and its peak population was 647 in 1970.
The village was founded in the mid-1800s near what was then known as Wessacaugen Creek, currently known as the Wiscoggin Drain, which flows through the southeastern portion of the village.
Like many Michigan communities, Unionville was founded as a lumber town. Horace C. Marvin came to the area with his family in 1854, building the first home in the community. He opened a general store, and was appointed as the first postmaster when a post office was opened on October 19, 1861. He named the village after his hometown of Union, Ohio.
The Saginaw, Tuscola & Huron Railroad (Pere Marquette, Chesapeake & Ohio Railroad, Huron & Eastern) established a station in Unionville soon afterward, and Unionville was incorporated as a village in 1879.
Today, the village is largely residential, with some commercial businesses providing for the needs of the village's residents and people traveling along the state highways.
