Concentrated in the south-central portion of Washington Township, Macomb County, Washington, Michigan is an unincorporated community.
In Michigan, unincorporated communities are without defined boundaries, but the area of the township generally considered to be part of Washington is in the southern part of the township, along M-53, Van Dyke Road, from 26 Mile Road north to about 28 Mile Road.
Situated just north of the Detroit Metro Region, Washington is surrounded by Washington Township to the west, north, and east, and by Shelby Township to the south.
Cities and villages within twenty miles of Washington include Romeo, Rochester, Utica, Rochester Hills, Sterling Heights, Auburn Hills, New Haven, Lake Orion, Armada, Mt. Clemens, Leonard, Fraser, Almont, Oxford, New Baltimore, Troy, Richmond, Clawson, and Lake Angelus, while the unincorporated communities of Preston Corners, Mount Vernon, Clifton Mills, Shelby Village, and Yates are within six miles.
Asahel Bailey made the first government land purchase made in the area that was to become Washington in 1821. Later that year, some land was purchased by Gideon Gates, George Wilson, and John Bennett. A post office was established on September 10, 1826, with Otis Lamb as postmaster. Washington Township was organized in 1837, and named for President George Washington.
Although Washington is not incorporated, and Washington Township has no incorporated cities and villages, the area is mostly developed, and the township offices are located within the community.

Greater Washington Area Historical Society, The
Organized in 1975, the Society has saved the old Washington High School building, promoted cultural arts, and collected several artifacts from Washington Township, which are on display at its museum on Van Dyke Road, between 26 Mile Road and West Road. Its board of education is listed, contact information is posted, and a list of projects that the Society is engaged in is featured on the site, which includes a history of the township, historic photos, and membership data.

Operated by the Friends of the Loren Andrus Octagon House, which was built between 1858 to 1860, and located in Washington, Michigan. The structure was listed on the National Register of Historical Places in 1971, and as a State of Michigan Historic Site in 1972.
