Weidman, Michigan is an unincorporated community and census-designated place that straddles Nottawa Township on the east and Sherman Township on the west, in Isabella County.
In Michigan, unincorporated communities don't have established boundaries, but census-designated places (CDPs) have defined boundaries for the purpose of the census, although they are without legal status.
The Weidman CDP includes a fairly large area. Its northern boundaries are West Vernon Road, West Denver Road, and West Rosebush Road. Its eastern boundaries are North Johnson Road and North La Pearl Road. Its southern boundaries are West Weidman Road and West Airline Road, and its western boundaries are Tilmann Lane, Walker Creek, and North Brinton Road.
Although the CDP covers a larger area to the north, east, and west of the main populated area, the community is concentrated south of the intersection of West Airline Road and North Woodruff Road, south of the Lake of the Hill.
Incorporated cities and villages within twenty-five miles of Weidman include Lake Isabella, Rosebush, Barryton, Farwell, Mt. Pleasant, Mecosta, Clare, Edmore, Coleman, and Shepherd, while the unincorporated communities of Drew, Beal City, and Sherman City are with ten miles.
The Coldwater River, a 13.1-mile waterway, and Walker Creek flow into the Lake of the Hill, an elongated body of water entirely contained within the CDP. Other lakes include Perch Lake and Riley Lake.
Like many Michigan communities, Weidman was founded as a lumber town, and named for John S. Weidman, who built a lumber mill in the early 1880s. In 1894, Weidman and his wife, Maggie, arranged to have the townsite platted and recorded by E.F. Guild, a surveyor. On September 26 of that year, a post office was established, with Horace H. Parsons as postmaster. Around that time, a branch line of the Detroit, Grand Rapids & Western (Pere Marquette) Railroad was extended to Weidman, which was the terminus of the branch, and a depot was opened there.
